Senior English Frankenstein Blog 2/8/11

Victor Frankenstein discovers the secret of life and uses this knowledge to create a sentient being. Imagine that you have discovered some previously thought-to-be-impossible technique or ability. What would you create? Describe your creation and tell why you came up with this idea. Respond to two other people’s creations. Early responders, please come back to respond to your classmates’ creations. No inappropriate responses, please.

When i was younger, all i ever wanted was a little friend to carry around in my pocket. i think it all started when i read the indian in the cupboard and i wanted my own fierce indian man. However i knew that this was impossible so instead i carried around a little teddy bear with me everywhere i went. I named him Hugbert and since he was pocket size, i would talk to him and pretend to feed him turkey meatballs and what not. So if i could create anything, i would definitely create a tiny being that i could carry around with me, tell secrets to, and hold conversations with. I'm not a people person but i hate being alone sometimes, so my pocket creation would be like a constant comfort. Dare to dream.
Oh! and its like, 10:20 and im really tired so sorry but i dont think im gonna go back on here to respond to other peoples creations. But im sure they are going to be awesome! thank you and goodnight.

I think Ayanna's is adorable aha, I used to love the Indian in the Cupboard and I would also love to have a little friend to carry around, seeing as life size people are sort of a drag most of the time -negative nancy status- anyway, if I were to create some sort of life that was all mythical and whatnot, i'd definitely create a dragon that I could ride. Like that book Eragon..before it became a terrible disney movie trash fest. The series is actually beautiful and I would greatly enjoy having a flying creature I could love and depend on. Since it's always been my dream to fly and see things from above for a change. (just pretend i responded to another classmate~)

I would create the ability to fly. I would do this because I love the feeling a person gets when they drop or fall unexpectedly. I would fly as high as I could and then skydive down. I would create this ability also because I like to travel. I like experiencing new places and new people. I would use my ability to travel to Nathan's island. We could surf and snowboard all day err day.

I would create a small planet near earth in which I lived alone with the ability to allow select people to come join me and hang out at will. The planet would contain a perfect island, its unique atmosphere allowing half the island to be covered in snow with an amazing mountain for snowboarding as well as mountain biking and rock climbing, while the other half would contain the most beautiful beach and sand dunes for dirt biking and surfing. The planets unique moon would creat perfect and clean waves constantly in different sizes down the coast so I could simply walk a ways to enjoy surfing in any form I desired. That would be the greatest thing ever.

Love the Indian in the Cuboard!! Used to be one of my favorite movies. I used to pretend when i was in kindergarden i had a fairy hiding in my desk and would take care of it and feed it food and stuff. Also love the dragon idea, i've always wanted to know what it felt like to fly! the only thing is i'm scared of falling... not of heights but just falling from high places. Used to have nightmares about falling down the rabbit hole in alice in wonderland and haven't been able to get rid of that fear since.
If i could create something, it would be the ablility for people to breathe underwater. For me, ever since i was little, i loved the water. I used to go swimming every day in the summer and spend hours in the aquarium just staring at the fishies. Now that i'm working at the aquarium, it would make my job and life SO much easier! Also i love the idea of being in the unknown and in a place no one else has gone before. Ocean is like outer space, basically just as unknown despite being part of our planet. Swimming is also kind of like flying, you still get that weightless/floating feeling.

I like Mackenzie's comment because I, too, wish I had the ability to breath underwater. When I was younger, I would dive under the water looking for things to pick up like rocks and bring them to the surface. I pretended that I was a mermaid. This was prbably influenced by my favorite movie The Little Mermaid. But I will make up my own ability for the sake of creating my own and would discover the ability to waterbend. Just like in the cartoon Avatar it would be cool to have the ability to control water to do whatever you want it to. Maybe I could bend the water to form a bubble around me as I am underwater o_0. Or maybe I could combine Mackenzie's idea with Nathan's ability to fly and be like a dragon-mermaid...Nah I'll just stick to waterbending.

I had two ideas to put up- the ablity to fly and the ability to breathe underwater. So Austin and Mac, I hate you for taking my ideas, but I love the way you think. Peter Pan used to be my favorite movie and I was totally convinced that someday I would learn how to fly. Not to mention the fact that I'm now addicted to the ocean.
but for my idea: if I were to create something I would create the ability to jump from one location to another, like in the movie Jumper. Traveling to new and exciting places would be so much more entertaining if you didn't havet to go through the airplane process. It would also make the commute from Kihei to Seabury much easier, as well as being a great way to surprise your friends!

So when I was younger, I waited for the Hogwarts letter to be brought to my house. And i waited, and I waited, and I waited. If I could create anything it would be magic. And wands.
I think that being able to cast spells and have other magical powers would be spectacular. It would also allow many other of my classmates' creations to become reality (breathing under water, flying, having a pocket-person, ect.). Not to mention the medical advances that may be possible.
Plus how fun would it be to practice spells?

Roxy: The ability to communicate with the dead would be completely amazing. To never have to truly lose loved ones would take much of the survival and anxiety out of life. However this calls into question the entire concept of death and weather it would be selfish to maintain our grip on the people who leave us (after all, we (the living) are the ones who seems to suffer the most in the wake of a death).

Nani: I WANT ONE TOO!

Zoe said...

Alright first of all this is Juliana I have no idea why it says Zoe and I dont know how to change it! Anyway, I would want a time traveling device, it would be so amazing to travel back in time whenever you want to change somthing that happened in the past. Also you would be able to get so much stuff done, I always wished i had more hours in the day. It would be so useful, and you would also be able to do whatever you wanted with no consequences because you could just go back in time and change it. It would be like having a world with no rules, that would be pretty cool.

I kinda liked Nathan's idea of a perfect planet where you could escape to, but at the same time I think people would feel left out. I mean if you only take some people it sounds kinda lame. This would also mean you miss out on being exposed to different people with different skill sets, without diversity life would become boring.
Also Nani i totally remember the Hugbert phase, but i think a real live miniture person would be super annoying somtimes!

Roxy said...

I would create a parallel universe where the living could actually reach out and communicate with people who have died that they miss. I would like to still be able to ask for my moms advice for example when she is gone. I came up with this idea because I have experienced losing important people in my life recently and I know it would help me heal emotionally.

Nathan...life is about learning to live with people even if you don't necessarily like them so I feel that you're idea of being able to control who comes and who doesn't may eliminate a fundamental principle that we are meant to learn in life. But your island most definitely would be the best of both worlds. If you ever find this planet you better invite me!

I would create a gentleman. Because chivalry has disappeared from the modern world. hahaha sorry. had to do it.

But really, i love Natahn's idea, but i also agree with Roxy's comment about people being apart of life.

Morgan, i love your magic idea. that would be so wonderful and would allow for so much invention :)

At first i wanted to create something that would bring world peace. But, i realized that conflict sells, and without it capitalism would be demolished because war is the basis of our society. That's when i realized it was perfect. I would create something that would bring World Peace. Maybe a seed of a tree that when planted would stop the animosity and as it grew more abundance and life would grow in the world until a forest of these trees lived, and the world prospered.

Hippy child dream. :)

If I could create anything, I would create an instant cure to the common cold. Although we have medications to help people who get sick, they do not work fast enough. With a cure to the common cold nobody would ever feel sick. They would simply be in a healthy and happy state all the time. Being sick is especially difficult for students because they must miss school, and make-up work can pile up fast. If there was a way to get rid of a cold before the body is too affected, then that would never have to happen.

I think that Nani's idea of a little friend is adorable. I think the idea of being able to have that little friend with you, is something that many people desire to have. I know that I am one of them. I also love Taylor's idea of being able to "jump" to different places around the world. Traveling is often time consuming and expensive, so being able to simply "jump" place to place would be helpful!

Allison said...

I would create a super fast way to travel... like teleporting and make it possible to go into space. But, then the value of traveling would decrease because of the easy ability, but i would LOVE to teleport. But there are so many negative sides to that. But i really just want to find a way to see the world without spending enormous amounts of time on a plane with money flying out the window. Flying and breathing underwater would be awesome, but i just want to see the world. And, nani, that is adorable and you are obsessed with Hugbert. I remember when you first got that little stuffy. O, Taylor i did not see your comment...Gr. Oh well. Also, Nathan, you would have to be god, but good luck with your fantastic idea. Okay, i need sleep bye!

Izzy said...

Alli stole mine! if i could create anything i would create a device that so you could teleport. That way you would never lose touch with people because you would always be able to see them. That would be pretty cool because you would be able to visit any remote part of the world with a snap of a finger. This would make the whole world like a neighborhood. Flying and breathing underwater would also something that i wish was humanly possible....maybe someday. I also like the idea idea of nathan's perfect island, because it sounds like everyones fantasy home where the water is perfect theirs sun and snow and people who you dont really love spending time with are invited.

i would create the cure for all diseases because i am a gentleman kailea. and nani's pocket freind would be awesome. i would just take out my pocket friend, and play with him in class.

William C said...

first of all, Sam... Dragons are SICK! i would love to have a pet dragon!
Nathan i think that i should start sucking up to you so i can be invited to your island!
Allison you took that idea from me! but its ok i forgive you :P
Kailea, some of us still practice chivalry and feel it is important to be a gentelman thank you very much...
I personally would create a remote that controls time. Some times in life we have to make choices that will affect our future, and this remote will give us a second chance at a happy life. This remote will also help me to save people's lives and hopefully make everyone happy.

I think teleportation and the ability to breathe underwater would be awesome! you could just swim forever and never have to surface for air. and instant travel would be so cool, being able to travel anywhere in the blink of an eye would be truly revolutionary. Also I'd want a dragon...that'd be legit.

My creation would be a machine that controlled the weather. That way, the weather would always be perfect. Crops could always grow, because it could stop droughts henceforth stopping world hunger. It would be the end of devastation caused by natural disasters. And every day would be a great beach day.

Although breathing underwater, flying, and having a pocket friend are all awesome ideas, if i could create anything i would create the ability to teleport and time travel. I would love to travel all over the world and being able to instantly teleport there would be awesome. Every day i could be in a different country and it would be free. There would be no time waiting at the airport and no jet lag. I would go to Japan, all over Europe, New Zeland, New York, Antarctica, and even travel in space and go to the moon. Being able to time travel, i would also be able to go into the future or to the past and meet all the people who died before i was born. I guess this is kind of like Roxy's idea but it wouldn't be a parallel universe. It would just be traveling back in time.

I have always been an avid fan of science fiction as well as the marvels and accomplishemts of modern technology. Recently I read an article on bionics (life inspired technology) in national geographic. This article included the leaps and bounds in the prosthetic industry, specifically how these machines are able to interface with the human brain. One example that caught my attention was of a relay device for people with spinal chord injuries. This device essentially acted as a nerve and would send a signal through the device from the brain to previously disabled parts of the body. This device got me brainstorming. What if this kind of technology reached the point where you could fully interface with a machine and essentially upload all that is you onto a digital "brain". You could process information exponetially faster than you can even imagine and potentially escape death itself, which relates to a comment by Morgan. Would such a thing be a selfish act and could you still consider yourself truely human? These are questions that should be asked. The process of merging man and machine has only begun so it may only be a matter of time...

well this is my second post since computers are STUPID PIECES OF CRAP! and originally I was talking about my dream to breath underwater, and simply laying at the bottom of the ocean. But now I wish we had never created computers and instead evolved a more sophisticated and less disconnected form of communication. Today it seems impossible to not have a computer, and if you don't have a computer you are at a huge disadvantage in resources as well as information since that is our primary source for both. My alternative would be to kill the technology we know today and instead utilize the other 90% of our brain and open a telepathic network that is shared universally.

Somewhat addressing Kailea's idea, I feel this could possibly end world war since we would share the thoughts and emotions of our world. Now people would probably think, oh our brains could not handle, Randle, but that is the impossible made possible part. its an unfathomable ability because our brains are so underutilized and undeveloped for that to be a reality.

I've noticed that almost everyone here has created an invention that brings them closer to nature, or to their fellow human beings. Mine kind of bridges that gap - I don't really have a large, grand, life-changing invention but I think it could change the way we travel. But I've had this idea since I was little, and it's part of the reason I want to go into science/engineering.

I've always wanted to figure out a way to keep animals off the road. I was in New York a few months ago, and I heard on the radio that during the fall (when the deer are migrating) the roads literally fill with bodies. And not only are they hazards to drivers, it always breaks my heart to see animals killed on the side of the road (I'm a sappy little animal lover! I know!). I've thought about electrical fencing, sonic deterrents, and pheromones, (all of these crazy things that people prevent shark attacks with) but they all seem impractical on a large scale. I would love to come up with something, and save a lot of traveling people and animals.

If I could invent anything, it would be the ability to not need to eat. People could still eat for pleasure, but elimination of starvation would eliminate one of the core difficulties in survival. if you never got hungry, you wouldn't get distracted just before lunch period, you wouldn't get uncomfortable after long periods of not eating, and nobody would need to resort to crime in times of strife.

I liked mackenzie's suggestion of breathing under water and austin's idea about flying. both of these ideas have very practical applications in the real world, making so much of life easier. but both of these ideas are also super fun sounding, it would be so cool to have either of those abilities!

If i had to choose it would be fire bending because it is awsome. iwas always fond by the cartoon Avatar the last air bender. The fire nation was my favorite because thery had fire even though they were bad. Fire would be sick to have because nobody will mess with me nobody. I like Nani's thing bout having a mini me. That would be sick. Also i would create a gentlewoman because we already have gentlemen in this world. HAHAHAHHAaHHAHAH Kailea ur too funny!!!!!!!! JK JK JK JK JK ;)
By the way this Iz Kapono i dont hacve a google account so im using my buddy's Rysan Cheeeeee

Alex Omer said...

I would create the ability to learn something instantly. All I would have to do would be watch a movie on skiing and I would know how to ski perfectly. Pono's idea of bending fire is one of the others I was considering so Pono is the man for choosing that one. Teleportation is also an awesome idea which a bunch of people mentioned so chee to them

I really love Austin's description of the feeling of falling down something. I also really love Taylor's reference to the movie Jumper, good movie :)
If I were to able to create something, it would be nature. I'd love to be able to grow a tree with that seems hundreds of years old with one grand gesture of my hand. Then I could cover my entire house and yard with beautiful exotic nature the way I want it to look. This would also be beneficial to the world since so much of it has been destroyed for human's need for paper and other natural resources.
